How we grade cancellation
The Exit Grade.
Every trial in our catalog carries an honest A-to-F grade for one thing: how hard it is to cancel. It rates the exit, not the product. A service you love can still earn a low grade if leaving is a fight, and that is exactly what the grade is here to tell you before you start.
The scale
What each grade means
Cancel yourself, online, anytime
One or two clicks in your account settings. No phone, no maze, no waiting for business hours.
Online and easy, with a small catch
You can still cancel online, but there are a few extra steps or a single retention offer to click past first.
Doable online, with real friction
The cancel path exists online, but it is buried, spread across several screens, or wrapped in a confirmation maze you have to work through.
Active dark patterns
You have to call or chat to get out, face aggressive retention, or hunt for a cancel button that has been made hard to find on purpose.
A documented finding
A regulator (the FTC or a state Attorney General) has taken action over the brand's cancellation or billing practices, or the process is outright deceptive. F is reserved for documented legal or regulatory findings, not merely annoying.
The checklist
What moves a grade down
- No self-serve online cancel
- A retention gauntlet you have to decline your way through
- A cancel button that is buried or disguised
- Phone-only or chat-only cancellation
- Written notice, a paper form, or certified mail required
- In-person cancellation required
- Early-termination or cancellation fees
- Documented billing-after-cancel complaints, or an FTC or state Attorney General action
Kept current
Cancellation flows change, so the grades do too. We recheck brands as they update their process, as part of our weekly subscription-news sweep. And you never have to take the letter on faith: every brand page shows the specific, plain-English reason for its grade, right under the badge.
Frequently asked
- What is the Exit Grade?
- An honest A-F rating of how hard it is to cancel a subscription. It measures the exit, not the product: a great service can still earn a low grade if leaving is difficult.
- Does a low grade mean the product is bad?
- No. The Exit Grade only rates how easy it is to cancel. A brand can have an excellent product and still make cancellation hard, and that is exactly what the grade is there to flag.
- When does a brand get an F?
- F is reserved for documented findings: a regulator such as the FTC or a state Attorney General has taken action over the brand's cancellation or billing practices, or the cancellation process is outright deceptive. Merely annoying is not an F.
- How do you keep the grades current?
- We recheck brands as they change their cancellation flows, as part of our weekly subscription-news sweep, and every brand page shows the specific reason for its current grade.
